Impact & Carbon

We believe infrastructure and accountability go hand in hand. This is how we put that into practice.

Impact & Carbon

We believe infrastructure and accountability go hand in hand. This is how we put that into practice.

Infrastructure with accountability

The energy and infrastructure industry is one of the largest contributors to carbon emissions. At the same time, it’s where some of the most meaningful progress can happen. Motive Power operates at that intersection. We help our clients build and modernize critical infrastructure while taking measurable steps toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Our impact work isn’t a separate initiative. It runs through everything we do, from how we train our team to how we engage with clients to how we invest our own resources.

The Gulch Environmental Foundation

Rainmaker Farm

Founded in October 2019, the Gulch Environmental Foundation is our nonprofit commitment to walking the talk. The Gulch dedicates itself to carbon sequestration projects, educating communities on sustainability, and championing the principles of regenerative agriculture.

The Gulch’s signature project is Rainmaker Farm, a 160-acre regenerative agriculture operation in Noble County, Oklahoma. Purchased in December 2020, the farm was selected because the region’s significant soil degradation offers a prime opportunity for carbon sequestration. The goal isn’t just to capture carbon. It’s to demonstrate a replicable and profitable model for the region’s expansive agricultural community.

Since 2020, the farm has progressed through multiple phases:

Transition from conventional farming to regenerative practices, including cover cropping, livestock integration, and crop planning.

Infrastructure development including water systems, greenhouses, and conservation equipment.

A multi-decade carbon sequestration research partnership with a university.

Bee incorporation, orchard planting, and biodiversity restoration.

Community outreach including a playbook on regenerative farm transition economics.

National Public Utilities Council (NPUC)

Founded in 2020, the NPUC was established to foster collaboration among utilities and accelerate the transition to clean energy. The NPUC serves as a platform for research, thought leadership, and peer-to-peer dialogue among utility leaders.

Annual Utility Solutions Forum

A gathering during New York Climate Week where utility leaders connect, learn, and exchange ideas. The forum features keynote speakers, panel discussions, tech talks, and interactive workshops in a trusted, peer-to-peer environment.

Annual Utility Decarbonization Report

Developed in collaboration with Visual Capitalist, the report serves as a benchmarking tool and annual ranking that tracks the clean energy transition efforts of utilities across the United States.

Research and Thought Leadership

Podcasts, benchmarking reports, roundtable discussions, and infographics assessing the current decarbonization efforts of U.S. utilities.

Conferences and Speaking Engagements

The NPUC partners with industry and climate leaders to showcase innovations at key conferences while sponsoring events that promote utility-first decarbonization strategies.

Impact in action

Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond client work and research. Our team shows up in the communities where we live and work.

Farm Day

Every year, Motive Power Impactors visit Rainmaker Farm in Oklahoma for a hands-on day of regenerative agriculture. It connects our team to the mission behind the work and gives everyone a firsthand understanding of carbon sequestration in practice.

Community Events

From tree planting in Denver to bi-annual in-person town halls, our team participates in events that reflect our values. These aren’t marketing exercises. They’re part of how we operate.

Annual ESG Report

Each year, Motive Power submits a CoP Impact report to the United Nations. The report outlines our progress across sustainability commitments, community impact, governance practices, and our contributions to a cleaner energy future. It’s one of the ways we hold ourselves accountable, not just to our clients and our team, but to the broader global community.

Tools we've built

Carbon Compass

Carbon Compass is a data analytics platform designed to help utilities map and manage their path to net-zero. It provides visibility into emissions data, tracks progress against decarbonization goals, and supports data-driven decision making for utility leaders.

Carbon Calculator

Internally, Motive Power uses our Carbon Calculator to track and offset the emissions from our business travel. Every trip is measured and accounted for. It’s one of the ways we hold ourselves to the same standards we encourage in our clients.

"We’ve learned a lot on this journey. Here’s some of what we think everyone in this space should understand."

Understanding carbon offsets

Carbon offsets allow organizations to compensate for their greenhouse gas emissions by funding projects that reduce or remove carbon elsewhere. They’re one tool in a broader strategy for moving toward net-zero, but they work best when paired with direct emission reductions.

How offsets work:

An organization calculates its carbon footprint, then purchases offsets equivalent to some or all of those emissions. The offset funds go to verified projects, such as reforestation, renewable energy development, or regenerative agriculture, that measurably reduce or capture carbon.

What offsets can and cannot do:

Offsets are not a substitute for reducing emissions at the source. They’re most effective when used alongside operational changes, clean energy adoption, and efficiency improvements. Think of them as part of the solution, not the whole solution.

Scope 1

Direct emissions from sources your organization owns or controls (e.g., fleet vehicles, on-site fuel combustion).

Scope 2

Indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heating, or cooling.

Scope 3

All other indirect emissions across your value chain, including business travel, procurement, and waste.
