Using Project Management and Projects Controls
to respond to Trends in the Utility Sector

Saturday 2:15pm – 3:15pm

The pace of change in the Utility sector is accelerating. Energy consumption patterns are changing. The growing correlation between climate change and fossil fuel usage is forcing major re-evaluations in policy at every level and businesses must respond. Aging infrastructure requires major investment in order to maintain reliability and safety standards. Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are being introduced to the grid significantly faster than the governance and infrastructure can be developed to ensure their full benefits can be realized. These challenges span generation, transmission and distribution and are evolving at such a rapid pace that all utility companies must respond to ensure they can continue to provide safe, reliable energy.

This presentation will discuss how the components of Project Management and Project Controls can be applied to help Utility companies evolve to meet these new demands. The everchanging landscape requires more transparency, more predictability, and more consistency from Utilities, which demands more reliable, forward-looking, and detailed information from Project Management and Project Controls. This can take shape in the form of – iterative contingency management on the project and portfolio level, cost and schedule integration, and proactive multi-level risk and opportunity management. We will also discuss examples of best practice from Motive Power’s work with Utilities across the US, including organizational assessments, the development and implementation of new processes, governance and reporting and the execution of projects.

The efforts that took place from the planning in early 2013 to the launch in late summer to the adoption by the end of the year are a testament to the resolve and perseverance of this department. As a result, we obtained 100% in department adoption of Project Zenith. These achievements would not have been possible without Motive Power’s guidance and support.

Motive Power provided consultation as well as hands-on support to assess the current state, identify the right tools, and plan the implementation into the organization.
